3-Phase AC Induction Motor Energy Efficiency Standards

AC motors are widely used in various industries and applications and their efficiency plays a crucial role in energy conservation and environmental sustainability. According to the IEA electric motor driven systems are responsible for 53% of global electricity use. The IEC has contributed to the definition of energy-efficient electric motor systems through the internationally relevant test standard IEC 60034-2-1 for electric motors and the IEC 60034-30-1 classification scheme comprising four levels of motor efficiency ("IE-code"):

  • IE1 Standard Efficiency
  • IE2 High Efficiency
  • IE3 Premium Efficiency
  • IE4 Super Premium Efficiency



Example
4 pole small motor of 2 hp operating at 50 Hz:
  • IE1 efficiency is 77.2%
  • IE2 efficiency is 82.8%
  • IE3 efficiency is 85.3%
2 pole 200 kW operating at 50 Hz:
  • IE2 efficiency is 95.3%
  • IE3 efficiency is 95.8%

Payback period will depend upon the running hours and cost of electricity. Energy represents more than 97 percent of total motor operating costs over the motor’s lifetime.

Exemptions in IE Classes
  • The following exemptions are made in IE efficiency classes:
  • The electric motors that have a number of poles equal to or greater than 10 are not classified into IE classes.
  • The high-speed motors are not classified into IE classes.
  • The electric motors permanently fitted with loads such as gearbox motors, etc. are not classified into IE classes.
  • Brake motors, submersible motors, etc. are also not classified into IE classes.
