Information on Electric Motor Nameplate

Frame size – not all motors will say its frame size but often in the “type” it will say. This motor for instance MMG132S is a 132 frame motor. Which is 132mm from the centre of the shaft to the ground. Frame size is important because it tells you what size the shaft is and the motor height (providing its a standard motor that hasnt been modified)

Speed (rpm) – motor speed is obviously important information.

HP or kW – this is the power of the motor. 1Hp = 0.75Kw (750 Watts)

Power (phases) – Is the motor single phase AC, 3 phase AC or is it DC

Voltage, Hz and Amps – This information usually isnt that important unless its a special motor i.e. 400hz or 220V 3 phase

Duty - You will also be asked what the motor is being used for. This is to make sure the correct type of motor is being supplied. The DUTY may also be requested.

Electric Motor Delta Connection or Star Connection

Star connection symbol is " Y ". Delta connection symbol is " Δ ".

In STAR Connection, the starting or finishing ends (similar ends) of three coils are connected together to form the neutral point in the shape of letter “Y”. A common wire is taken out from the neutral point which is known as the Neutral Wire. In Star Connection, Smooth starting and operation with nominal power and normal operation without overheating can be achieved.

In DELTA Connection, the opposite ends of three coils are connected together which forms the shape of Greek alphabet “Δ”. In other words, the end of each coil is connected with the starting point of another coil, and the common joints form the three phase wires. In Delta Connection, motor receives the highest power output.

For small size electric motor 3-Phase Star connection is input 400VAC, 3-Phase Delta connection is input 220VAC.

3 Phase Electric Motor Special Frame Size

Most electric motor manufacturers follow the IEC standards. Few of the manufacturers do supply special frame of electric motor. The special frame didn't mean weird dimension, but 1 size frame smaller. When application design is crucial and space is limited, special frame might take advantage. Besides that, special frame also could fit smaller gearhead. As gearhead not cheap, smaller gearhead could benefit save more.  Example 0.37kW motor standard frame is 71, special frame is 63. Find out more from table below.

IEC World Electric Motor Frame Size

Most electric motor manufacturers they design their electric motor with IEC 60034 & IEC 60072. All manufacturers that follow IEC standard, the electric motors are interchangeable. IEC has fixed the mounting for B3 foot mount, B5 flange mount. Below are the charts about IEC Motor Frame Size and standard 4pole motor frame size.

3-Phase Electric AC Motor : Mounting

Mounting is 1 of the important information what to know when ordering a motor. There are many types of mounting such as B3, B6, B7, B8, V5, V6, B5, V1, V3, B14, V18, V19, B36, V15, B65, B75, B34, V17, V37, B64, B74, so many to know.

Nowadays many electric motors design their bearing able to handle all kind mounting positions. Therefore 5 important mounting only need to know. Here are the 5 mountings B3, B5, B14, B35, B34.

B3 – is a foot mount motor.
B5 – the motor is mounted using the holes in the flange / no feet
B14 – the motor is mounted by the bolt threads in the flange / no feet
B35 – the motor mounts by the holes in the flange and/or the feet
B34 – the motor mounts by the bolt thread in the flange and / or the feet

Remember always telling the supplier what kind of mounting you required because motor nameplate seldom show motor mounting information.

Electric AC Motor : Number of Pole

AC motor refers to the number of magnetic poles created in the stator of the motor. These poles are crucial for the motor's operation as they generate a rotating magnetic field that interacts with the rotor, causing it to turn and produce mechanical motion. In other words, the number of poles determines how many north and south pole pairs are formed in the stator. The number of poles in an AC motor directly influences its speed of rotation. The more poles there are, the slower the motor will run, and vice versa. The number of poles also determines the motor's synchronous speed, which is the theoretical speed at which the magnetic field rotates in the stator.
